REVIEW TO 'YEAR OF THE REAPER' BY MAKIIA LUCIER

ADVERTISEMENT {REVIEW}

I received this book as a review copy in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion. A big thank you goes here to Hachette Australia.

Three years ago, Lord Cassia disappeared in the midst of war, on a mission entrusted to him by the king. Since then, a devastating plague has swept the land, leaving countless dead and the kingdom forever altered.

Having survived a rotting prison cell and a merciless illness, Cas, now eighteen, wants only to return to his home in the mountains and forget past horrors. But home is not what he remembers. His castle has become a refuge for the royal court. And they have brought their enemies with them.

When an assassin targets those closest to the queen, Cas is drawn into a search for a killer... one that leads him to form an unexpected bond with a brilliant young historian named Lena. Cas and Lena soon realize that who is behind the attacks is far less important than why. They must look to the past, following the trail of a terrible secret - one that could threaten the kingdom's newfound peace and plunge it back into war.

I really like the colour scheme of the cover for Year of the Reaper by Makiia Lucier and the design makes a whole lot of sense as soon as you read the story behind.

The author’s writing style has easily captivated me, especially with its fast pace and the unexpected plot twist.

I quite enjoyed the plot itself and this book constantly held my interest. This story is very focused on Cassia’s family bonds - which isn’t a bad thing - and what happened during his absence.

However, I personally would have liked a bit more romance as the author mostly hinted at it. The spark has clearly been there between the characters, but the potential hasn’t been fully used.

Cassia is a wonderful main character. The further the story goes, the more he grows as a person. He seemed quiet and tired at first, but he quickly made his way into my heart. Lena on the other hand jumped right at me, with her cheeky attitude and all.

All summed up, I very much enjoyed reading Year of the Reaper by Makiia Lucier. There have been catchy plot twists, witty and brooding characters, as well as an interesting setting.
