I received this book as a review copy in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion. A big thank you goes here to Bloomsbury Australia.

Ever since she can remember, Briseis has had power over plants. Flowers bloom in her footsteps and leaves turn to face her as though she were the sun. It's a power she and her adoptive mothers have spent her whole life trying to hide. And then Briseis inherits an old house from her birth mother and suddenly finds herself with the space and privacy to test her powers for the first time.

But as Briseis starts to bring the house's rambling garden back to life, she finds she has also inherited generations of secrets. A hidden altar to a dark goddess, a lineage of witches stretching back to ancient times, and a hidden garden overgrown with the most deadly poisonous plants on earth. And Briseis's long-departed ancestors aren't going to let her rest until she accepts her place as the keeper of the terrible power that lies at the heart of the Poison Garden.

The cover of This Poison Heart by Kalynn Bayron has my heart! I adore this incredible cover design and couldn’t think of anything better suited for this story.

This has been my first book from this author and I have to admit that I fell in love with her writing style pretty quickly. It is easy to read and flowing wonderfully, which made the whole reading experience great.

When it comes to the story itself, there have been some really heartbreaking plot twists and scenes, but also others that made me smile.

I absolutely love the magic system and all the plants in this book. It has been a completely different and yet pleasant experience to discover them all - especially because I’m one of those readers who’s looking up everything they don’t know.

The characters range from lovely to strange, from kind to unbelievably cruel. The protagonist is an easy to love, relatable, loving, and kind character who earned her place in my readers heart.

This Poison Heart by Kalynn Bayron is a beautifully written, queer coming of age story that has been an utter highlight to read. With its great characters, descriptive scenery and interesting plot, it felt like coming home. I can most definitely recommend this book to all of you. Pick it up and discover Brie, her family, and their adventures.
