I am not an Ingrim, not a judge at the court of Lamlash, and I will never be. But, if I was, I think I would do things differently. I would give people stones and ask if they could explain things with just a piece of charcoal. I would lie them under an umbrella of stars and ask if they still felt the same about things. And, when they’d finally come to a judgement, I‘d ask them to walk a thousand kilometres, just to be sure they didn’t need to change their mind about that judgement.

The cover... gosh, the cover. I think it's one of the most beautiful covers I've ever seen. I especially love the fire silhouettes and the colours and it will always have a special place on my shelf so everyone can see this beauty. And it even has the author’s signature printed inside, how cool is that!?
This story is so much more than I expected. When I first received this book, I didn't know what would wait behind this stunning cover. But let me tell you: This book NEEDS to be read.
It might seem cruel and brutal every here and there but it’s also full of love, friendship, and loyalty. It shows you that you can slowly lose your heart to someone without even noticing it until it’s too late. Until you would give everything of you to safe them. Even if it means they can just live one more day with happiness in their heart.
This story also shows how delicate the human psyche can be. I mean, how much does a person have to endure until they finally break? What do they have to go through to create a castle, well a whole new world actually, in their mind to escape reality? The tension and the heartbreak in this book make it feel like a cord which is about to snap.
What’s a little bit different are the very short chapters, which sometimes are really just a page or two. I’m not sure if I like it or not but I’m pretty sure it’s necessary to be able to process what’s happening in this story.
The main characters are Mhairi and Mo.
First, you’ll meet Mhairi and she might come across as heartless. Though as the story continues, you’ll start to love her. You’ll start to pity her. And you’ll want to just hold her tight in your arms to comfort her. She might have had to be cruel to others to survive, but she’s good at heart.
Soon you’ll meet Mo. This little boy doesn’t speak. Yet he teaches Mairi so much by just being there and joining her in her journey.
‘The Survival Game’ by Nicky Singer is a book full of pain, loss, and fear. But this is also a story that teaches you a lot about love, friendship, home, and hope. It shows you what really matters in life.
I can absolutely recommend this book and hope to read many more books by this talented author.
