If everything in your life was based on a lie. Would you risk it all to tell the truth? At Montverre, an exclusive academy tucked away in the mountains, the best and brightest are trained for excellence in the grand jeu: an arcane and mysterious contest. Léo Martin was once a student there, but lost his passion for the grand jeu following a violent tragedy. Now he returns in disgrace, exiled to his old place of learning with his political career in tatters. Montverre has changed since he studied there, even allowing a woman, Claire Dryden, to serve in the grand jeu's highest office of Magister Ludi. When Léo first sees Claire he senses an odd connection with her, though he's sure they have never met before. Both Léo and Claire have built their lives on lies. And as the legendary Midsummer Game, the climax of the year, draws closer, secrets are whispering in the walls…

This cover of ᴛʜᴇ ʙᴇᴛʀᴀʏᴀʟꜱ has been Insta love for me. I simply love everything about it: Every tiny detail as well as the colour palette that has been used for this design.
Bridget Collins' writing style has been something else entirely. Though I mean that in the best possible way. Especially the author's world building skills are astounding. This world feels kind of like or own, yet it is completely and utterly different.
The story itself is an absolute masterpiece in my opinion. It is full to the brim with emotions, intrigues, mysteries, lies, political matters, unexpected events, and so much more.
When it comes to the characters, it really is hard to say much about them them this time. Not because they're boring or something like that, no. The issue is that nothing and no one is like it seems, so I can't say anything without taking the experience away from you. But let me tell you this much: All of them are stunningly amazing! Some of them are sweet, others are completely confident, and others yet again seem to be total innocents. Don't trust anyone, least of all your own instincts as nothing, really nothing, is what you think it is.
ᴛʜᴇ ʙᴇᴛʀᴀʏᴀʟꜱ by Bridget Collins took me utterly by surprise. I expected a quick and easy read for in between. Something fun, yet easy to solve. Oh boy was I wrong! This book is full of mysterious twists and turns, lies, emotions, stunning characters, and a mind blowing world building. I can highly recommend this story and its definitely been a highlight for me.
