REVIEW TO 'THE BEAST WITHIN' BY SERENA VALENTINO

Updated: May 17, 2020

ADVERTISEMENT {REVIEW}

I received this book as a review copy in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion. A big thank you goes here to Scholastic Australia.

A cursed prince sits alone in a secluded castle. Few have seen him, but those who claim they have say his hair is wild and nails are sharp--like a beast's! But how did this prince, once jovial and beloved by the people, come to be a reclusive and bitter monster? And is it possible that he can ever find true love and break the curse that has been placed upon him?

I love the simple cover with the Beast and the gorgeous font. I think it suits the story well.

Sereno Valentino's writing style is enchanting, emotional, and easy to read. This and the short chapters make this book a great read for in between and in my opinion it's also suitable for younger readers. I quite enjoyed the different point of view on a well known story. It has been great to find out what happened to the prince in the first place and how he dealt with it. Between the prince and the Beast are whole worlds of differences. While reading ᴛʜᴇ ʙᴇᴀꜱᴛ ᴡɪᴛʜɪɴ, the reader learns why the curse happened on the first place and how it slowly changed a cruel, arrogant prince to a mindful and self-conscious beast.

The story is mostly prioritised before Belle came into the Beast's life, so the romance between them fell a bit short and felt overall a bit rushed. But I think that's okay as it is supposed to be the Beast's story after all.

The characters I came across are all very well known from the original story. After reading this book, I still get a twitchy eye when I think about Gaston and I definitely still adore Belle and the Beast. I also really like Circe and found the conversations with her sisters quite funny at times.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I would recommend it to everyone who's open to a different point of view but would suggest not to get your hopes too high when it comes to the romance between Belle and the Beast.
