REVIEW TO 'LORE' BY ALEXANDRA BRACKEN

ADVERTISEMENT {REVIEW}

I received this book as a review copy in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion. A big thank you goes here to Hachette Australia.

For centuries, Zeus has punished the gods with a game called the Agon, which turns them mortal for one week, and at the mercy of being hunted by those with godly ambitions. Only a handful of the original Greek gods remain, the rest replaced by the mortals who killed them and ascended.

After her family's sadistic murder by a rival bloodline, Lore escapes and vows to repay her parents' sacrifice by doing one thing - surviving. For seven years, she has pushed back dark thoughts of revenge against the man responsible for their murder, a man by the name of Wrath who has attained unimaginable power. Except for one week, every seven years. A week that is fast approaching ...

When Lore comes home on the first night of the Agon to find Athena gravely wounded on her doorstep, the goddess offers her an alliance; they have a mutual enemy, after all. But as the world trembles under the force of Wrath - a god with the power to destroy all of humanity - will Lore's decision to bind her fate with Athena's come back to haunt her?

The cover from ʟᴏʀᴇ by Alexandra Bracken is an incredible eye-catcher and I fell head over heels for it! It promises an adventure into Greek mythology and stands out in the crowd.

When I first saw the synopsis of this book, I’ve been very excited to read it as I loved the general idea of the Greek mythology with the modern twist. It sounded like a thrilling read with a lot of potential.

Unfortunately, the story has simply not been for me. For me, the plot and also the jumps between the present and the memories have been simply confusing. It was quite hard to follow the story and I missed to see a ‘red line’ of the plot. And then the ending just felt rushed and didn’t tie up properly. It felt like there are too many loose ends left. However, I did love the setting of this story.

The characters have been okay but didn’t convince me completely. Especially the friendships just didn’t do it for me, they couldn’t capture me and I didn’t feel the emotional attachment between them. Though I did warm up a bit to Lore and with a little more work on her, I think I would have adored her.

In conclusion, ʟᴏʀᴇ by Alexandra Bracken had a lot of unused potential. The general plot idea has been really intriguing and the setting has been great, but the plot would have needed more of a red line and some work on the details. The characters are okay but nothing that stays in my reader’s heart. Sadly, this book fell flat for me and I can’t recommend it.
