Inspired by the true story of Muslims who saved the lives of Jewish children in the Second World War. In 1942, in the Grand Mosque in Paris, 11-year-old Ruben is hiding from the Nazis. Already thousands of Jewish children have disappeared, and Rubens parents are desperately trying to find his sister. Ruben must learn how to pass himself off as a Muslim, while he waits for the infamous Fox to help him get to Spain to be reunited with his family. One hint of Ruben's true identity and he'll be killed. So will the people trying to save him. But when the mosque is raided and the Fox doesn't come, Ruben is forced to flee. Finding himself in the south of France, he discovers that he must adjust to a new reality, and to the startling revelation of the Fox's true identity.

Do you read historical fiction?
Little Miss C recently ventured into this genre as I always try to bring them our history closer. We are native Germans and I think it's important to not forget what happened in the past. Since my grandpa told me first-hand stories from his experiences in WWII, I felt the urge to bring this part of history closer to my little raccoons, too.
The cover of ʙᴇʏᴏɴᴅ ʙᴇʟɪᴇꜰ - ʜᴇʀᴏᴇꜱ ᴏꜰ ᴛʜᴇ ʜᴏʟᴏᴄᴀᴜꜱᴛ by Dee White is designed in a simple, yet memorable way that reflects the story perfectly.
The author did a great job of combining a true background with fictional characters. Her writing style captures the reader and doesn't let go until you inhaled the whole book. And even afterwards, you'll find your thoughts to be drifting back to this book. It is perfectly suited for middle-graders and adults alike. ʙᴇʏᴏɴᴅ ʙᴇʟɪᴇꜰ - ʜᴇʀᴏᴇꜱ ᴏꜰ ᴛʜᴇ ʜᴏʟᴏᴄᴀᴜꜱᴛ is a beautifully written, heartbreaking story that's full of fear, hope, and kindness. Even though you're feeling the fear of the characters while reading, you also feel their hope as well as their bond.
The characters are heart-warming. Their kindness, loyalty, and bravery as well as their courageous actions to stand up for what is right are simply overwhelming. All of them were very relatable. C felt as if standing right next to them and experiencing this horrible, scary time through their eyes.
With ʙᴇʏᴏɴᴅ ʙᴇʟɪᴇꜰ - ʜᴇʀᴏᴇꜱ ᴏꜰ ᴛʜᴇ ʜᴏʟᴏᴄᴀᴜꜱᴛ, the author Dee White has created an eye-opening story full of sacrifice. She makes sure that the horrors of the past will never be forgotten but Dee White also ensures that the readers see what kindness and hope can do. And even though Little Miss C had to have many tissues at hand, we highly recommend this book to everyone.
