OZ COMIC-CON BRISBANE 18th SEPTEMBER 2022

SUMMARY OF THE DAY:

Have you ever attended a Comic-Con? No? Oh boy, then you're definitely missing out on a fun time!

On Sunday September 18th 2022, my lovely Sav - Caffeinated Bibliophila - and I went on a little road trip together and headed out to attend our first ever Oz Comic-Con in Brisbane. So how about I tell you a little about our experience there?

What was on the plan for us?

We went to the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre with a rough idea and high hopes for the day. The Q&A panel of Ricky Whittle and Omid Abtahi has been the only fixed stop on our schedule for the day but other than that we kept our schedule pretty relaxed.

What else did we do?

We had plenty of fun roaming the halls of Oz Comic-Con, discovering all the amazing artists in attendance, watching everyone leave some memories on the Scribble Wall, creating a massively big wish list full of accessories and trinkets, and seeing all the Cosplayers showcase their incredible costumes.

Sav and I also ended up getting a caricarture of the two of us drawn by the lovely Greg Vercoe - thanks Sav for making me do this and pushing me to get out of my comfort zone 💜

Quite a few people stopped at the stall and watched, which was both horrifying and funny at the same time. Especially, because we had to sit still and I knew people were watching but I couldn't see them 😅

And of course there was our absolute highlight of the day: the Q&A panel with Ricky Whittle and Omid Abtahi. You can read a more detailed article about the panel further down.

But let me ask you a question right away:

How mortified should you be if a Grounder points at you!? Because that did the trick for me and I might've put the camera down for quite some time after that 😜

Q&A PANEL: RICKY WHITTLE & OMID ABTAHI

Both Sav and I simply knew we had to see this panel as we admire - and maybe fangirl a little... or a lot 😋 - Ricky Whittle's roles as Lincoln (The 100) and Shadow Moon (American Gods).

And oh goodness, my sweets... I still can't reconcile the bubbly bouncy-ball of energy that is off-screen Ricky Whittle with his usually pretty serious roles on screen!

As a professional photographer who specialises in wildlife & family shootings, I'm quite good with fast movements. BUT... my poor old lady of a camera had a bit of a hard time capturing Ricky on the day.

I swear, he could not sit still for a second and has been constantly on the move!! Though it has been incredibly fun seeing Ricky being so goofy at times during the panel, listening to his and Omid's conversation and their answers to their fans' questions, as well as getting to be so close to these great actors.

But that wasn't all.. Nope... Ricky hopped of the stage, walked into the audience and guess what!? He plopped down onto a fan's lap, who was too nervous to actually ask her question but seemed to have plenty of fun going by the giggles 🤭

One would think that he would head right back onto stage after that surprise, right!? Well my sweets, think again!

Ricky kept the cool experience up. He stayed in the audience, sat down in the row of chairs right in front of the one Sav and I have been in, and kept having fun. And as you all know, I'm a pretty shy person but even I was tempted to just quickly poke him to confirm he's really there 😅

We're also following his stories on Instagram to keep updated with the progress on his current role in the upcoming movie Land Of Bad. Honestly, I think I've never giggled as much over anyone's stories on Instagram - IYKYK 😂

Omid Abtahi at oz Comic-Con

Omid on the other hand seemed to be more of a quiet type of person. While he has been an active part of the conversation that's been going on both with the moderator on the stage and with the audience, he seemed quite content to stay right there.

He's been answering plenty of questions from his fans and I think everyone got the impression that he is a nice guy. I loved hearing more about his personal experience in the show business and found it very sad to hear that in the beginning he has been offered mostly very specific roles because of his cultural background.

Some more shots from the panel - Unfortunately, I had some taller people in front of me and couldn't get more photos of Omid.
